Laura Estep’s involvement in the Mosaic After School program started when she was in college. As a volunteer at 19 years old, she fell in love with the students. Upon graduation from college, however, Laura learned the program was being discontinued. She knew her students needed the tutoring and homework help to succeed so she worked to find a new location. Our Saviour Lutheran partnered with her to re-start the program. With nine students the first day, she has grown the program to 65 students and another 35 on the waiting list. Laura is invested in her students’ academic performance but more importantly, considers her students an extension of her family.
The Mosaic Arts Program is an after school program that serves elementary and middle school children whose second language is English. In addition to the challenges of English as a second language and parents who speak little or no English, is the challenge of families living in poverty. The Mosaic Arts Program looks to empower these children who are not often appreciated and celebrated by society and help them achieve academically and socially. The program allows students to both learn more about and celebrate their culture through traditional cultural dances, visual art projects, skits, and spoken word pieces. They take their life and translate it into art, presenting a piece of themselves for all to see, and allowing them to be proud of it.
