Up Close with Concordia Place

Recently, members of our staff and Board of Directors had the opportunity to visit our grantee partner, Concordia Place, and see their Teen Leadership Program in action.

Concordia Place began in 1981, when Concordia Lutheran Church responded to the request of three single mothers who needed after-school care for their children. The church created a small child care center serving 12 children ages 6–12. As Concordia Place says, “We started with a Yes.”

Over the decades, they have continued to find ways to say Yes—serving more communities and expanding programs for more ages.

Today, that same spirit lives on through their Teen Leadership Program, which supports 250+ teens ages 13–18 year-round. Students come from 37 schools and 25 zip codes across Chicago, and many travel over an hour each way on public transportation to participate.

We Raise is proud to support this work with a $100,000 grant, helping ensure these programs remain free for families through a learn-and-earn model, where teens receive stipends while building real-world skills.

During our visit, we met inspiring young leaders from three programs:

  • Ruckus Entrepreneurs – teens learn the fundamentals of socially responsible business while producing and selling natural body care products made with garden-grown herbs and sustainable ingredients.
  • Culinary Leaders – teens grow food in youth gardens, learn nutrition and cooking skills, and build leadership and collaboration.
  • Craft and Culture Lab – teens explore global craft traditions alongside modern tools like 3D printing to develop creativity and cultural connection.

Our board was deeply impressed by the teens’ openness and dedication to the program. It was a terrific afternoon and a powerful reminder of what happens when organizations continue to say Yes to young people.

We’re grateful to partner with Concordia Place in investing in Chicago’s next generation of leaders.
