A Long-Time Donor Whose Heart Never Left the Classroom

For Jim Handrich, investing in We Raise Foundation goes beyond making gifts. This lifelong educator is living out his values rooted in family, faith, and a tireless dedication to urban ministry.

Jim remembers We Raise (then called Wheat Ridge Ministries) from his early childhood. “I grew up in a small town in Iowa. My family were members of the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod (LCMS). Our congregation would raise money to support the tuberculosis sanitarium that had been started in 1905 by a Lutheran congregation in the Colorado town of Wheat Ridge.”

Jim joined the LCMS Walther League youth group as a high schooler, gathering donations from Christmas Seals to support We Raise’s ministry as it expanded to other areas of funding health, wellness, and education. “My dad was an inner-city school principal in Milwaukee, so I knew schools like his benefited,” Jim said.

Watching his father serve in under-resourced schools helped Jim understand the challenges of faith-based urban education. Those memories and insights carried into his own work as a commissioned minister of the LCMS. At St. Matthew Lutheran School in New York City, Jim taught students from Harlem and the Bronx. During his later tenure as principal at Our Saviour Lutheran School, a K-12 school in the Bronx, We Raise invested in a school pastor project. Jim served 24 years as a principal and administrator at Hong Kong’s International School. Returning from abroad, he joined the board of directors of both the Center for Urban Education Ministries and We Raise.

He’d come a long way financially while overseas. “I had $200 to my name when I left the Bronx,” he said. “But with higher salaries and free housing in Hong Kong, I was able to save and invest so when I retired, I could leave a charitable legacy—and not wait until after my lifetime to start it.”

Jim supports family members as well as numerous charitable causes. We Raise is among his top priorities. “God has blessed me unbelievably, and I have a real heart for urban ministry and education,” he reflected. “It is both my responsibility and a joy to be a blessing to organizations like We Raise because I really believe they are doing the work God has called us to do.”

Jim is especially inspired by We Raise’s approach. “I think they’ve been particularly outstanding in developing leaders. And they don’t just give financial support. They stick with the nonprofit and the personnel, actively helping them navigate through issues and challenges. Many charitable foundations don’t offer the coaching and support services that We Raise provides—and it’s just those services that are so often needed in the inner city.”

For Jim Handrich, giving is about multiplying impact. From his father’s example to his own decades in education, he knows how faith and leadership can change lives. By investing in We Raise, Jim ensures that future leaders have the support they need to carry that transformation forward—his legacy of faith and generosity continuing to bless many.
