Nehemiah 2.0
- Sponsoring Organization: Kingdom Prep Lutheran High School
- City/State: Milwaukee, Wis.
- Grant Program: GrantsPlus
- Grant Amount: $300,000
Project Summary:
Nehemiah 2.0 is a dynamic initiative that integrates faith-based education with hands-on workforce development, guiding students toward real-world career paths in the trades and real estate—while laying a strong foundation for future homeownership.
Building on the success of Nehemiah 1.0, which introduced freshmen to problem-solving through a biblical lens, Nehemiah 2.0 equips juniors and seniors with the skills, knowledge, and practical experience needed to pursue meaningful careers and contribute to the revitalization of Milwaukee’s communities.
At the heart of the program is real-world application. Students participate in projects involving the purchase, renovation, and sale or rental of homes in need of rehabilitation. Through this work, they gain hands-on experience in key trades such as carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work, while also learning the financial and managerial aspects of real estate. These experiences address Milwaukee’s pressing need for affordable housing, all while fostering technical skills and social responsibility.
Nehemiah 2.0 brings academics to life, allowing students to apply classroom concepts—such as mathematics and problem-solving—in tangible, impactful ways. As they work on home renovation projects, students not only develop technical expertise but also build essential soft skills like reliability, teamwork, communication, and punctuality. This blend of academic and applied learning prepares students for long-term success.
With mentorship from industry professionals and exposure to both the technical and business sides of trades and real estate, Nehemiah 2.0 effectively bridges the gap between high school and career. Students graduate with confidence and the tools to pursue apprenticeships, vocational training, employment, or entrepreneurial ventures.
The grant will support the salary and benefits of the Nehemiah 2.0 Program Director over a three-year period, enabling the program to expand its reach and deepen its impact. By May 2028, Kingdom Prep aims to have renovated and sold or rented at least three homes in Milwaukee and engaged more than 100 students in the process.
