Grants Made Under Wheat Ridge Ministries

Marian Middle School is the only all-girls, private, faith-based middle school in the City of St. Louis. The school serves families from lower-income backgrounds, providing a holistic education rooted in faith and supporting other areas of student and parent well-being.

Thanks to the generosity of We Raise Foundation donors, the school and its principal were awarded an Emerging Leader Grant of $15,000.

The two-year grant is supporting Marian’s Reviving the 360 Experience, a comprehensive plan to address post-pandemic challenges of student learning gaps, enrollment challenges, and staffing shortages. Launched by Principal Sierhah Price, the initiative is focused on:

  • Revamping curriculum and involving parents to better meet individual learning needs
  • Increasing extracurricular offerings
  • Expanding wraparound services through professional counselors and a family resource advocate

“Breaking the cycle of poverty requires more than a strong academic foundation,” Price explains. “Marian Girls are capable and determined, but challenges that often come with poverty can block their path to achievement. When we support their overall wellness, they can fully engage in learning and prepare for the future.”

The initiative is demonstrating its value. Marian’s enrollment is at full capacity with a waiting list, learning gaps have narrowed, and staff are better equipped to support students beyond the classroom. Marian students are now achieving triple the proficiency of their local peers.

All this couldn’t have come at a better time for Isabelle and her family.

Isabelle arrived at Marian as a sixth grader. Her broad smile hid the painful wounds of the loss of those closest to her, including an uncle who was a father figure and her mom, who had passed away from breast cancer. Isabelle was one of four children in the full-time care of their grandmother, who herself was in ill health and struggling to keep up.

Marian’s wraparound services helped keep Isabelle on a strong academic path. The family received food to help the kids come to school ready to learn. Marian arranged transportation to get Isabelle to and from class. The school offered other resources to remove obstacles that might hinder Isabelle’s ability to focus on her education.

The grant also enabled Price to take part in FOCUS St. Louis’ premier leadership offering, one of the nation’s most highly respected programs of its kind.

“FOCUS offered me a renewed perspective on how to show up for my team and support them in ways that help grow them.”

Price expresses profound appreciation for the Marian community and We Raise donors. “I feel honored to have served in this role. Marian has helped me understand that from a place of choice and soundness and oneness with God, I am capable of a lot of things. And I want We Raise donors to know how deeply grateful I am. Your support and your prayers truly matter—and they are changing lives.”
