Grants Made Under Wheat Ridge Ministries

For a child growing up in an under-resourced community, summer can be a season of possibility — or one with too few opportunities to learn and grow and play alongside their peers.

That’s why your gifts to We Raise Foundation mean so much. By supporting grants to Christian organizations such as Hope Horizon in East Palo Alto, Calif., you are creating places where young people can find friends and mentors, academic encouragement, and the chance to discover Jesus’ love in a way that changes the way they see themselves and their future.

Hope Horizon runs year-round enrichment programs. A recent We Raise grant helped sustain and expand its six-week summer day camp, Camp Hope Horizon, which receives many more applicants than funding can cover.

For Josette “Josie” Langevine Kim, Hope Horizon’s executive director, the camp is about much more than keeping kids occupied. “It’s about awakening in them the sense that they are created in love to flourish in unique ways. Many of these children have never had the opportunity to understand how amazing the Lord has made them to be,” she says.

Many Hope Horizon participants come to the program performing below grade level, carrying difficulties that dim their sense of what is possible for their lives.

Hope Horizon seeks to open up new possibilities by equipping them to grow academically and spiritually, gain life skills, and develop as leaders.

Faith is central to that work. Formerly known as Bayshore Christian Ministries, the organization adopted the name Hope Horizon in 2022 to reflect its commitment to hope, possibility, and walking alongside young people for the long term. “But Christ is still central to what we do,” Josie notes. “We work to understand and love each child and family in the way Jesus would.”

“Adam” came to Hope Horizon from a complicated family situation. Through mentoring, safe spaces, and hearing God’s Word, something began to change inside this angry middle-schooler.

Josie couldn’t be more grateful for the transformations your generosity has made possible. “Through God’s grace, and with the help of partners like We Raise, Hope Horizon is walking alongside students as they discover their gifts, strengthen their faith, and grow into leaders who give back to their community. When I look in their eyes, it brings so much joy to my heart. These kids have so much potential. There’s a purpose for them in this life.”

Josette “Josie” Langevine Kim serves as Executive Director of Hope Horizon East Palo Alto. A Stanford University graduate with experience in corporate leadership and nonprofit ministry, Josie is passionate about helping young people discover their God-given potential. After experiencing a life-changing stroke, she felt called to devote her leadership more fully to serving others and creating opportunities for young people and families to flourish.
