Emerging Leader Helps Famillies Thrive Through Food and Faith

When Johanna Vallejo talks about healing, she speaks as a nurse, the mother of a special needs adult child, and a woman listening closely for God’s direction.

Vallejo is a minister-in-training with Restoring God’s Family (RGF), a Christ-centered nonprofit organization that strengthens families and empowers leaders to restore communities to the glory of God. RGF’s primary outreach initiative is the Jubilee Mobile Food Pantry, which meets the needs of families facing food insecurity.

Vallejo leads Power of Food, a growing ministry helping families integrate nutrition, faith, and science for their optimal health and wellness.

Kennisha Moffett, RGF’s founder and executive director, says, “With access to healthy foods, our bodies can heal and health outcomes can significantly improve. We firmly believe that when families have healed and are restored, they will be empowered to transform the world around them.”

Vallejo recalls how God led her to this ministry.

Her adult son was diagnosed with autism at age three. Conventional treatments eased some symptoms –– but with hard-to-manage side effects. Guided by the Spirit, Vallejo began studying how various foods, nutrients, and herbs affect the body. By including natural supports in her son’s care regimen, she saw him improve. He began sleeping better, eating a wider variety of healthy foods, and experiencing fewer severe tantrums.

“It’s not one or the other,” Vallejo says of the medical field and natural healing. “It’s both — modern medicine and God’s foods.”

During COVID, Vallejo signed up for RGF’s online discipleship program. Her knowledge and enthusiasm caught Moffett’s attention.

“Johanna is a phenomenal overcomer,” Moffett notes. “We found her to be a most dedicated and gifted leader. After she began sharing what she had learned about nourishing her son, we invited her to become a contributing teacher, benefiting families who visit our food pantry and community gardens.”

Strengthened by an Emerging Leader grant from We Raise Foundation, RGF’s food ministry has taken a giant leap forward. “With these funds,” Moffett notes, “we aim to grow our program to include holistic health education services, educating more people about healthy food choices and alternative natural remedies –– and teaching families how to ‘fish for themselves.’”

Vallejo is also benefiting through leadership education funding. “This grant will definitely help me pursue opportunities I wouldn’t be able to access otherwise,” she says. “I want families to have knowledge … to know that fruits carry vitamins, that everyday foods can support immunity and healing, and that God cares about our whole body—mind, body, and soul.”

With faith as the foundation and food as the tool, the Power of Food is helping restore health, dignity, and hope—one family at a time.
