Grants Made Under Wheat Ridge Ministries
St. Marcus Lutheran School in Milwaukee disciples K3-8th grade children for Christ, training them in excellence for their roles in their family, church, community, workplace, and country.
Thanks to the generosity of We Raise Foundation donors, the school was recently awarded a $100,000 grant for its Family Empowerment and Early Childhood Literacy Initiative.
The three-year grant will enable St. Marcus to expand upon its proven success in closing the Black-White achievement gap in Milwaukee. The initiative focuses on the following key areas:
- early childhood literacy
- parent empowerment and financial coaching
- ministry to mothers and fathers, strengthening family relationships and equipping parents to play an active role in their children’s academic, spiritual, and personal development
“We believe that every child who walks through our doors bears the image of God and is destined to achieve great things,” said St. Marcus Executive Director Kole Knueppel.
“And yet, many St. Marcus families are contending with poverty, housing insecurity, and the financial challenges spanning generations. We believe in and are committed to a ‘radical witness’—walking alongside children and families through all of life’s successes and challenges. Through this spirit of accompaniment, St. Marcus reaches beyond the school door, leaning into the exciting work of doing life together.”
That vision is paying off as the reading proficiency of St. Marcus students exceeds the Milwaukee average by more than double within peer schools of predominantly Black students from low-income households.
Grant funds will help ensure that more children enter elementary school with the foundational reading skills necessary for long-term academic achievement.
The initiative will also equip parents with practical tools and strategies to support their child’s literacy development at home. That’s important. Children spend only 18% of their waking hours in class. What happens after determines whether school-day gains take root or erode.
Moe Lawrenz leads the program’s financial coaching component. Moe has guided hundreds of families toward budgeting, building strong credit, and many towards homeownership.
Colette is one of them. This mother of seven, whose children have attended St. Marcus, worked closely with Moe, then took a courageous leap to become a homeowner through the school’s partnership with Habitat for Humanity.
“I grew up in the projects of Chicago,” Colette said. “It was a nightmare … I never want my children to experience that. I want to show them they can do anything they put their minds to.” In 2023, Colette’s family moved into the Habitat home they helped build.
“… I wouldn’t have made it without God. And I’m grateful for all the support from We Raise donors. This is a huge deal for my family and I appreciate everyone who prayed and worked to make sure we have a better life.”
A final pillar of the initiative focuses on strengthening the relationships and support networks that children need to thrive, empowering fathers and mothers to become more deeply engaged in their children’s lives and education.
“We are salt and light to the glory of God,” the school’s website pronounces. With the help of We Raise supporters, St. Marcus aims to be of eternal value to families like Colette’s, transforming the future for young scholars across the Milwaukee community.
