A Brighter Future is Brewing for Kansas City Students … Thanks to You!

From roasting and brewing to labeling their coffee brand, students at a Kansas City, Mo., school are gaining essential skills beyond traditional classroom boundaries.

The Skola (“school” in Serbian) coffee venture is one of the newest initiatives of the CAP (Common Arts Program) Trade Skills Program at Mount Tabor School of the Liberal Arts. Ben Gipson developed the CAP enrichment program, which launched in 2022, to blend academic study with real-world, experiential learning.

“A lot of schools focus on test scores, graduation, and the traditional college pathway. However, not every student is equipped for college, and many low to middle-income families cannot afford college tuition. The CAP Skills program is designed to empower students not only to learn but also contribute in a meaningful way to their communities,” said Gipson, who has been working in youth programming for more than 10 years after graduating from Central Baptist College in Conway, Ark., with a bachelor’s degree in Biblical studies and a minor in business.

We Raise Foundation awarded Gipson with an Emerging Leader grant in late 2024. A portion of the grant enabled Mount Tabor to purchase a coffee roaster, training materials, and tools for the coffee roasting business and auto mechanics classes. Both programs launched at the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year as for-credit options for high school students.

“The We Raise grant came at a crucial time and gave us an immediate boost to begin the work that God has given us to help this generation of students find their footing in this world,” Gipson said.

The school invites local professionals and trained volunteers to share their knowledge and teach two days a week. In addition to the coffee business and auto mechanics, high school students can also choose to participate in other CAP skills courses like business management or urban farming, where they grow and sell produce from the school’s garden. The hands-on approach of the CAP skills program encourages students to hone their creative problem-solving, interpersonal communication skills, adaptability, and leadership development.

In a matter of a few months, the school community is already feeling the sustainable impact of these innovative programs. By utilizing profits generated by sales of the student-run coffee business and repaired cars, the school is able to lower tuition costs and break down barriers of inequality by putting high-quality Christian education within the reach of lower-income families.

“We are extremely thankful for the generosity of We Raise donors. Their gift is an investment into our story of how God will multiply their talents to transform the community and grow me as a leader to serve the students God has entrusted in my care. I plan on furthering my education in Christian leadership and ministry, which wasn’t possible before receiving the grant,” Gipson added.

The impact of your prayers and financial gifts extends beyond the walls of Mount Tabor School. It has the potential to create opportunities for innovators like Ben Gipson to create a cycle of positive change and pave a path for a better future for the students and their families in Kansas City.
