Emerging Leader Brings God’s Love to Hawaii’s Children

When Pastor Enoch (Jusung) Kim arrived in Aiea, Hawaii two years ago, Good News Hawaii Church was a small non-denominational Christian congregation with just a handful of members. Pastor Kim saw an opportunity to grow the ministry, inspiring not just the adults within their faith community, but also the children.
“I sought to create an environment where the kids, rooted in the love of Jesus, feel a sense of belonging, develop life skills, and gain hope for their future,” Pastor Kim recalls.
“I held a kids’ camp that was well attended. That’s when I decided to start the Saturday Kids’ Bible School. We started with three children and it has grown from there.”
Thanks to donor gifts to We Raise Foundation, that ministry is now thriving. Through Bible lessons, ukulele music, art, worship dance, and shared meals, the children discover not just faith, but family.
“We talk about God’s love and how it brings lasting happiness,” Pastor Kim says. “My wife leads songs and crafts, then we eat lunch together before heading out on local field trips.”
Many of the families whose children attend the Bible School face financial hardship. That limits their parents’ ability to be able to take their kids to the cultural and historical treasures of their hometown. “Many of these children had never seen parts of their own island before — places like the Dole Plantation or the Bishop Museum,” Pastor Kim says.

The need inspired Pastor Kim to apply for a We Raise Emerging Leader grant.
With help from friends like you, Pastor Kim was awarded $15,000 in assistance to hone his skills and keep his ministry flourishing. Part of that funding covers the costs of the youths’ meals, admission fees, and materials, so everything is offered free of charge.
Grant funding also allows Pastor Kim to receive ongoing mentoring and leadership training. “We Raise has been such a blessing, to me personally and to our entire community,” Pastor Kim says. “Without their support, some kids wouldn’t be able to attend and experience God’s joyous love here.”
One participant is eight-year-old “Malem*.” Malem lives with his mother and eight siblings. Once shy and reserved, he has grown happier and more confident through his weekly attendance at the Bible School and an overnight camp experience.
Now, Malem eagerly joins in the songs and lessons. He loves welcoming new students attending and volunteers to pray aloud. “His experience is a joyful reminder of how faith, friendship, and opportunity can transform a child’s life,” Pastor Kim notes.
Over the past six months, the Bible School attendance has grown to 10-15 children per week. Larger, multi-day camps are now taking place. The ministry’s volunteer team has expanded with two new helpers assisting in various Saturday activities.

Pastor Kim notes that more adults are now regularly attending Sunday services, as well.
“Through consistent teaching, loving relationships, and fun, memorable experiences, the ministry is fulfilling its mission,” he says with gratitude to God and to everyone supporting the Good News Church in Hawaii.
Because of faithful friends like you, ministries like Pastor Kim’s are growing strong roots and bearing fruit. Each Bible lesson, song, and shared meal is planting seeds of faith and hope that will shape young lives for years to come. When you support We Raise, you’re not just funding a program—you’re empowering leaders, strengthening communities, and helping children experience the transforming love of Jesus.
