Grantee Partner Helps Turn Second Chances into New Beginnings

When Joseph Johnson (JJ) refers to his being freed, he doesn’t mean the moment he was released from prison. He was serving a sentence, in bondage in an earthly sense, when he gave his life fully to God. “Even though I was in prison,” JJ recalls, “the day I did that was the freest I’d ever been.”
JJ says he had a good upbringing with parents who cared. But being outdoorsy and adventurous, by age 12 he fell in with friends who were a bad influence. JJ made poor choices and after his parents divorced when he was 16, things spiraled even further downhill, leading to a tragedy.
Following a car wreck that claimed his buddy’s life and involved alcohol, JJ was given a six-year prison sentence. “It took me a while to forgive myself,” he says. “But the Lord had a reason for keeping me here.”
Preparing to enter prison, JJ said he knew he had to get clean, sober, educated, and give his life to the Lord. He started going to church while incarcerated and took part in Alcoholics Anonymous. He earned his GED.
Then he discovered JUMPSTART, a model Christian reentry program that helps people returning from incarceration rebuild their lives through faith, accountability, and practical training. In early 2025, We Raise awarded JUMPSTART a $100,000 GrantsPlus grant.
“I came across JUMPSTART by accident,” JJ says. “Once I joined, I loved it. It helped me understand my Christianity so much better. It taught me how to make God smile with the smallest things.”
JUMPSTART staff and volunteers became like friends to JJ with mentoring, life-skills training, employment assistance, housing support, and community accountability, both before and after his release. Addressing their spiritual, emotional, and practical needs is key to JUMPSTART’s proven power to help participants achieve long-term transformation. Small steps help people like JJ rebuild their lives and achieve self-sufficiency through hope, discipline, and faith.
After his release, JJ went straight to work, creating a new life rooted in a positive and fulfilling purpose. On a Christian dating site, he met Keri. For Keri, JJ turned out to be “the godly husband I always wanted.”
Today, they are raising their blended family of five children and building a business alongside a thriving home. “It is our dream to open a Christian-based gym where people can grow physically and spiritually strong,” JJ says.
Transformed in the love of Jesus, JJ keeps close ties with the JUMPSTART community that helped transform his life. He and Keri recently attended a reunion and plan to host program volunteers at their new home. “JUMPSTART—those are good people. I love them, and Keri loves them to death. Every chance she gets, she wants to stay in touch. That’s the best way to describe JUMPSTART — it’s just love.”
Thanks to We Raise donors, a growing number of Christ-centered programs are changing individuals and communities for the better. Together, we are restoring people to self-sufficiency and helping them discover God’s purpose for their lives. For JJ and his family, that has meant a second chance for joy and fulfillment.
“JUMPSTART is still here for us,” JJ says. “It is a great program for people who are trying to better themselves. They definitely help you quit trying to take everything into your own hands. We’re in God’s hands.”
