Turning Prison Cells into Classrooms of Hope—Thanks to You
JUMPSTART, a Christ-centered prison ministry with a proven holistic approach to breaking the cycle of incarceration, is extending its impact across North Carolina correctional facilities thanks to a generous grant from We Raise Foundation.
“The grant was an answer to our prayers. The exact amount of the grant matched what we needed to equip and enable us to lift off programs at seven additional prisons in North Carolina,” said George Benner, executive director of JUMPSTART NC.
The three-year GrantsPlus $100,000 grant will allow approximately 630 incarcerated men and women in multiple facilities to participate in JUMPSTART’s structured 40-week discipleship curriculum, which utilizes the Bible and the “The Purpose Driven Life” book by Rick Warren.
JUMPSTART began in 2008, envisioned by four men incarcerated in South Carolina who watched the prison doors revolve. Since then, the volunteer-driven ministry has expanded its services to state-run prisons in Georgia, Ohio, Florida and North Carolina—with plans to reach Texas by late 2025.
“This program was not started by a think tank or a university. God was working in the hearts of these incarcerated men who wanted to help others find their God-given purpose, build character and lead lives from the inside out,” explained Ed Troha, who left his private-sector job and now leads JUMPSTART USA. “I was impressed by the effectiveness of the program. It’s not a quick fix. We offer a foundation of faith, accountability, responsibility and submission to authority.”
Operating with the belief that God’s future is greater than our past, the JUMPSTART comprehensive model has demonstrated strong participation and remarkable success. More than 7,000 men and women have participated inside prison. JUMPSTART has tracked the recidivism rate of released graduates—96% have stayed out of prison.
Benner credits part of the program’s success to the highly relational focus. “Volunteers and incarcerated individuals spend 40 weeks together; it deepens the connection and trust with one another so that they can get to the heart of the issues.”
Kelvin, one of the first graduates of the program, describes the JUMPSTART as a turning point in his life after a 20-year struggle with drugs that led to incarceration. “It helped me do some deep-down searching which led me uncover, discover, and recover. These individuals show up and love you, even after prison. My mentor’s unconditional love has helped guide me through this transitional period of my new life.” Since his release, Kelvin has completed his certification to be a peer support specialist and has made it his mission to bring others closer to Christ.
“The support from We Raise brings hope to people in society who feel they were written off because of past mistakes. It also encourages volunteers to step in hard places.” Troha also emphasized that We Raise donors are essential in JUMPSTART’s work. “It is important to remember there are caring people who serve in less visible ways—those are the donors. They are an important part of equipping ministries like ours but they serve in a quiet way. We are grateful for their generosity.”
