Your Generosity Fuels a Journey of Resilience and Redemption

Growing up in hardship and facing devastating setbacks, including a life-changing diagnosis and addiction, Chrystal’s life seemed beyond repair. But thanks to the support of Keyway Center for Diversion and Reentry, made possible by your faithful giving, Chrystal found hope and a fresh start. Today, she’s rebuilding her life, discovering new talents, and inspiring others with her resilience.

This incredible comeback stems from a $500,000 grant awarded to Keyway by We Raise and the Lutheran Foundation of St. Louis in 2022. The funding allowed Keyway to expand its programs and provide critical resources for women like Chrystal, determined to turn their lives around.

Chrystal grew up in a small Indiana town with a single mother raising five children. At 25, her mother’s mental health crisis forced the siblings to live with relatives for two years. When her mother returned, six-year-old Chrystal faced emotional turmoil but found refuge in school sports. “Sports were my ticket away from home. I knew I was good enough because the stats showed that I was,” she recalls.

After eight years as a multi-sport athlete, Chrystal’s life changed drastically with a diagnosis of Buerger’s disease, causing severe inflammation in her hands and feet. Her athletic career ended, and after 23 surgeries, pain led her to substance use, addiction, and incarceration.

In her darkest moments, she lost everything: her job, an 18-year coaching position, and her relationship with her daughter. She felt hopeless.

While serving a second sentence in prison, Chrystal embraced treatment and recognized it was time for a change. Upon release, she faced a critical choice: return to her old life or seek a fresh start at Keyway. She chose Keyway, stating, “You can’t have one foot in your old life and one foot in your new life and expect things to change.”

Her initial weeks at Keyway were daunting but came with unwavering support from participants and staff. “I’ll never forget feeling like I wasn’t being judged – the Keyway staff were just there to help and listen.”

In just a few months, Chrystal learned her talents extended beyond sports. Last August, she graduated from the Missouri Works Initiative’s Building Union Diversity program, a six-week pre-apprenticeship designed to connect participants with rewarding careers in construction trades. Her dream is to join a production-focused trade after completing the Keyway program.

Chrystal’s journey reminds us how your generosity transforms lives. Thank you for helping women like her embrace their comeback and make second chances possible.
