The MAAFA Redemption Project & Community Partners Win $10 Million Grant

Big congratulations to our grantee partners at The MAAFA Redemption Project and their community partners as they were recently awarded a $10 million grant for the development of the Sankofa Wellness Village in Chicago’s West Garfield Park community.

The village will bring critical resources back into a disinvested neighborhood, including the 60,000-square-foot Sankofa Village Wellness Center with a community credit union, the MAAFA Center for Arts and Activism, a business incubator and entrepreneurial support hub, and pop-up markets bringing fresh food to neighbors until a permanent grocery store opens.

We Raise was an early investor in the MAAFA Redemption Project and we are proud of their continued work to build a healthier, safer, more hopeful future for the West Side of Chicago.

“We are blessed to be in a burgeoning partnership with We Raise. Three years ago, We Raise invested in our unique mission when very few did. We are grateful that their initial support put us on a path to scale our vision and impact, culminating in the Pritzker Traubert Foundation’s ‘Chicago Prize’ award. Indeed, we are witnesses to what God can do with a mustard seed of faith.”

The MAAFA Redemption Project is a faith-based residential institute for emerging adult men of color (ages 18-30) located in West Garfield Park, a neighborhood with one of the lowest life expectancies in Chicago. It offers dormitory-style residential support, workforce training, character and spiritual-development, and a host of wrap-around social services for its participants. Its mission is to significantly improve the quality of life for the young men and their families.

Thanks to the faithful support of our donors, We Raise, in partnership with the MIGMIR Fund, awarded MAAFA a $300,000 grant in 2020 to champion their transformative work. The grant is enabling MAAFA to rehab a three-unit building to house 10 more men, and also hire more staff for coaching and mentorship programs.
